LifeSmarts Competition (Submitted by Mr. Farrar)

On Friday, February 27th, four students (Elizabeth Erb, Jacob Hackman, Claire Johnsrud, and Alex O'Connor) from Belleville High School attended the LifeSmarts competition held at Edgewood College. LifeSmarts is a program of the National Consumers League that promotes knowledge in the areas of Personal Finance, Consumer Rights & Responsibilities, Health & Safety, Technology, and the Environment. This team of students had to qualify for this competition by taking a series of online tests. Only the top six schools in Wisconsin, based on the online tests, were invited to Edgewood College for the live competition. The live competition was completed after 8 hours, and Belleville prevailed as the runner-up (2nd place). This outcome rewarded each student in attendance from Belleville a $500 scholarship to a school of their choice.  I am extremely proud of their hard work and dedication. They proved that anything can happen if you believe in yourself and put your mind to it. Please help me congratulate Elizabeth Erb, Jacob Hackman, Claire Johnsrud, and Alex O'Connor on their recent success!

Environmental Science Lesson (Submitted by Mrs. Knudson)

Last week, the Environmental Science class learned about the water we drink by using a sand-tank groundwater model provided to the district by UW-Stevens Point. With this model, students were able to simulate the flow of groundwater in a watershed to learn where it comes from and where it flows to. They were also able to observe the water table and how it changes with different scenarios, as well as the effects of pollution from common sources such as landfills and runoff. Through this hands-on activity, students gained a better understanding of the water cycle, importance and function of groundwater, and where the water from their faucet really comes from.

Middle School Science Presenter

Middle School Science teacher Lana Swenson welcomed Bart Morrick into her 8th grade Science classes on Wednesday, February 4. Mr. Morrick is a Belleville graduate and is the father of three students in the Middle and High Schools. He works for HBM as an application engineer. His company provides equipment to Boeing, NASA, the United States Army, Siemens, Airbus, and Virgin Airlines. He spoke to students about his work experience with waves and sound waves, in particular. He brought examples in to produce sounds and discuss the waves produced by them. In one instance, the students jumped at the unexpected sound booming out of an old car horn.
