WILDCAT PRIDE DAY!

The Middle and High Schools ran an alternate schedule today (1-29) to celebrate Wildcat Pride Day. Nearly all of our students qualified for a behavior incentive-based activity day, with less than three individual office disciplinary referrals for the month of January. At the high school, students participated in a variety of activities of their choice. The Middle School students went rollerskating in Monroe. It was a day to acknowledge the awesome students we have in Belleville!

Mr. Ziehr takes on Nicole Sanders in table tennis.
Mrs. Krueger and Mrs. Meir hosted a music Kahoot competition.
Mr. Bussey invited students in to get acquainted with reptiles and amphibians.
Students in Ms. Olson's room played "Minute to Win It."
Students played chess in Mr. Cryderman's Room.

Middle School Spelling Bee

Belleville Middle School held its annual Spelling Bee on Friday (1-29) morning. After 12 rounds plus a championship round, 7th grader Roxana Grunenwald emerged as the champion. Christian Hakala, another 7th grader, was the well-deserved runner-up. Roxana will very quickly move onto the next phase of the competition. Wish her luck!

Go For Gold/Parents' Night

The home girl's basketball game on Thursday night against Cambridge wrapped up the "Go For Gold" fundraising week for Childhood Cancer Awareness. Players from both teams wore warm-up tee-shirts to support the cause. Savannah Grindle, a 2015 Belleville High School graduate and cancer survivor, was the game's honorary captain.

Thursday night's game was also Parents' Night. The girls wrote notes to their parents and presented them to moms and dads as players escorted them around the gym. Thanks to all our parents for the sacrifices that they make for their kids!

Teens for Jeans Campaign

Belleville High School will once again be participating in the Teens for Jeans Campaign this year. Please bring your "gently used" jeans to the Main Office to donate to homeless teens in the area. During the week of February 1st, we will also be collecting jeans at the Thursday (2-4) and Friday (2-5) home boys' and girls' basketball games against Waterloo. It could help BHS win a $3,000 grant (and $500 for a celebration party). Thank you to Britney Markhardt, Clarice Loeffelholz, and Rachel Uebelacker for spearheading this effort!

Ag Guest Speaker from Landmark Cooperative

Landmark Cooperative human resources representative Jeremy Henkels came and presented to the Plant & Soil Science class today. Jeremy spoke with students about the Landmark Cooperative as well as career opportunities. He explained to the class about the history and purpose of a cooperative.  He also highlighted specific careers for students both directly out of high school and after a college education. Landmark Cooperative not only has a location here in Belleville with animal nutrition, agronomy, and grain, but also other locations throughout the southeast quarter of Wisconsin. In addition, Landmark Coop also has a division in energy so there were many different job opportunities that he discussed involving those 4 areas that students could consider. Lock-in for Upperclassmen

On Friday night (1-15) following the home boys' basketball game, the Spirit Club hosted a lock-in for juniors and seniors. Thirty-eight 11th and 12th graders stayed from 10pm to 5am, playing and participating in a variety of games and activities including flashlight tag, human foosball, and boccerball. It was successful enough in its inaugural year to put it on again next year. Thank you to Mrs. Tretow, Mrs. O'Connor, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Fell, and Barb Funseth for hanging in with the students all night!

Middle School STEM Lessons

Since the return from the holiday break, Mrs Swenson has had her Science classes experimenting with electricity and magnetism. Students have also been using their Chromebooks with the TinkerCAD program to create small items on the 3-D printer. The Middle School invested in its own 3D printer during Term 2.

A MUST SEE!

Belleville Middle and High Schools will present national cyberbullying expert Justin Patchin in a Parent Forum on Wednesday, February 10, from 6-7pm in the auditorium. He will be able to answer parent concerns and questions regarding Internet use and social media issues. Don't miss this special opportunity! He will be addressing our students and staff earlier that day.

FFA Half-time Conference

Belleville FFA recently attended the 2016 Wisconsin Half-time Conference in Stevens Point. Each school can have two members attend, and David Statz and Adam Laufenberg represented our chapter well! They participated in workshops presented by the State FFA Officers where they learned about community service, advocating for agriculture, and got some ideas for new activities that we can start here in Belleville. They also enjoyed a presentation by a past National FFA Officer and met many other members from around the state. [Submitted by Mrs. Knudson]

Cate Machine and Welding Donation

Thank you to Gene and Steve Cate who donated and delivered a CNC mill today to the high school. The mill is valued at approximately $15,000. It will help us to launch another Project Lead the Way course - Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). The Cate family is hoping that their partnership with the school district is replicated by other area businesses. Steve Cate, a Belleville High School graduate, will spend time with teacher Ed Neumann each month teaching our students how to program and best use the machine. Cate Machine and Welding has also been a fantastic partner with our School-to-Career program, allowing students to job shadow at their shop, as well as taking on one paid student position per year.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Advanced Placement Honor Roll AGAIN!

For a second consecutive year, Belleville High School has earned a place on the Advanced Placement Honor Roll. We are 1 of only 425 school districts nationwide to receive the honor. To qualify, a school must show an increase in the number of students taking AP exams while maintaining or improving their scores of 3 or above (to qualify for college credit). In the Capitol Conference, only Lodi matched Belleville's success. Cambridge and Lake Mills also earned a spot this year. Madison, Verona, and Waunakee were the only other school districts in the area on the list. Congratulations to our students and staff!
(We are listed under the "School District of Belleville.")

Middle School Science Dissection

Mr. and Mrs. Swenson have their students dissecting and labeling frogs in their 7th grade Science classes. This is always one of the units with the highest interest levels for students. Just look at their faces!

Middle School Forensics

Thursday, January 7, the Middle School Forensics Team will travel to Willow Brook Middle School for the first meet.  The bus will leave at 2:30pm and will return around 8:30pm.  Team members will call or text parents on the way home.  The Level 1 meet will be held at St. Dennis in Madison on Thursday, January 21, and the Level 2 will be held here at Belleville Middle School on Thursday, February 4.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the meets.  Each meet will consist of three rounds.  Rounds will start on the hour, usually, with the first round starting at 4:00pm.  Students and spectators must be in the round before the start of the round and will not be able to leave the room until the round is over.  When the round is over, the judge will release the teams and spectators for a break before the next round.  Team members will not know how they performed until the end of the night.  The coaches will collect the written comments and ballots at the end of the evening and share with the team members.

Between rounds, concessions will be available to purchase for both team members and spectators.  Team members may also choose to pack a sack dinner if they choose not to purchase food.

Please email Mrs. Schultz or Mrs. Miller with any questions.  schultzt@belleville.k12.wi.us or millere@belleville.k12.wi.us

Opportunity for Future Scientists and Engineers

With our launch of Project Lead the the Way and expansion of the program in the years to come, here is an upcoming opportunity for our students.

Eagle Scout Honor for Abe Morrick

Congratulations to Abe Morrick for earning the rank of Eagle Scout in a ceremony on 1-3! Eagle Scout is the highest rank in the Scouts, with only about 2 percent of all Boy Scouts reaching it. Abe had to pass through five ranks leading up to it and earn 21 merit badges. His service project (seen in the picture below) was to build a canoe launch on the Sugar River.
