Though these special announcements happened in several different formats this year, the response from our three students was uniform-- All three of these Wildcats were both ecstatic and honored to hear the news! This year, as we all know, has been different and the Belleville Middle School Geography Bee would be as well. This year the National Geographic Geography Bee was cancelled, however, the Belleville Middle School was able to continue with the Geography Bee with permission from National Geographic to use their materials. The Belleville Middle School’s Geography Bee was held on Tuesday, December 22nd, with 19 classroom finalists in grades 7 and 8 competing. This year’s middle school contest was held virtually via Zoom and for the first time, live-streamed on the School District of Belleville live Youtube channel. The Geography Bee included geography questions on U.S. states, world rivers, animals around the world, odd one out, economic activities of countries around the world, and the ever-popular “Weird but True,” questions about geography that also explain an unusual aspect of a country or continent. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 5pt; margin-top: 5pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The school champion of the Middle School competition was 7th grader Lucas Peterson, with 7th grader Camryn Bublitz taking runner-up honors. In past years, several hundred students fill the halls of Belleville Middle and High School for this event.
Belleville had three high school teams participating in this event. Unfortunately, there is not a middle school team this year. Students have been practicing their events after school hours both virtually and utilizing the science labs and gymnasium.
This year students from each school logged in virtually from their own schools to partake in over 30 different events. There were 35 schools throughout the country participating in this first-ever satellite tournament. A satellite tournament is when students participate in the event from their high school. The December tournament Belleville will participate in will be a mini virtual tournament meaning students will participate from their homes. </span></p><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family: tahoma,sans-serif;">Congratulations to the team in scoring first place in the small school division as well as the following individuals who placed in their events. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Vogel's dedication to our students to find opportunities to practice and put on the virtual One-Act performances this year. These students practiced virtually every week through Zoom sessions. Mr. and Mrs. Vogel worked with CESA 2 to create a set up that could be streamed for virtual production and YouTube streaming. The students that were involved in the festival had props, costume, hair, and make-up. As a spectator, you were able to enjoy the acting from the safety and comfort of your home. Thank you and congratulations to all students involved.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PHZnDvwqbDE/X7AxhVLAFpI/AAAAAAAABQI/0hNRWNSqXrglT7uSryHdlKw3Q_aVZKbnACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-6623.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PHZnDvwqbDE/X7AxhVLAFpI/AAAAAAAABQI/0hNRWNSqXrglT7uSryHdlKw3Q_aVZKbnACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-6623.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w6-PL0DVDiI/X7Axhd-RDNI/AAAAAAAABQM/vMp4b9WcGckwPH3ACpOA20piyUsB4RpygCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-6625.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w6-PL0DVDiI/X7Axhd-RDNI/AAAAAAAABQM/vMp4b9WcGckwPH3ACpOA20piyUsB4RpygCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-6625.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div>Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092585700386577343.post-24552914285214147532020-11-11T04:34:00.005-08:002020-11-11T04:34:00.619-08:002020 National Honor Society Inductees<p><span face="Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif" style="font-size: 13.2px; text-align: justify;">The show must go on. Fifteen Belleville high school students completed both written and oral tests in English, Social Studies, Science, and Current Events. For the first time in school history, Belleville High School has <b>three</b> finalists. We would like to congratulate
<b>Jacob Kean, Elise Medenwald, and Jackson Nolden</b>. <p></p><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family: tahoma,sans-serif;">These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the stat's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. From the approximately 6,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation.</div>Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092585700386577343.post-70240904752274715362020-08-16T14:22:00.000-07:002020-08-16T14:22:52.903-07:00Students continue to volunteerNeedless to say, this has been an atypical summer. Many of the yearly community events in which Belleville students have volunteered their time have been canceled. Even though many of these events have been unable to take place, there are still numerous opportunities to earn service hours. A few of our high school students have recently volunteered their time helping community members sew masks, picking up trash along local roads, and creating a back to school video. Below is a list of additional ways to earn service hours while abiding by the Department of Health Guidelines. If you have additional ideas, please send them to Mr. Loshaw at <a href="mailto:loshawk@belleville.k12.wi.us">loshawk@belleville.k12.wi.us</a> and he will add these ideas to the service cord form <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UuO4xlG3-Kkk30X8se7IsPVyuayFz4yHOzhGMkacRBM/edit">attached here</a>. <div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Send cards to service members</li><li>Send cards to nursing homes </li><li>Sew masks or blankets to donate </li><li>Pick up trash along the road </li><li>Mow a neighbors yard or help with other yard work </li><li>Tutor younger students virtually </li><li>Ask an elementary teacher if there are books you can read aloud and record yourself</li></ul><div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2z-fiXql_XQ/XzmhJLYpgxI/AAAAAAAAA20/yaHv7vb1vEg9bsqK6qRti55yW3rhw0I5wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1242/IMG-0655.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="911" data-original-width="1242" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2z-fiXql_XQ/XzmhJLYpgxI/AAAAAAAAA20/yaHv7vb1vEg9bsqK6qRti55yW3rhw0I5wCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/IMG-0655.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div></div></div>Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092585700386577343.post-50828397587391270832020-07-17T07:25:00.002-07:002020-07-17T07:26:31.272-07:00Advanced Placement Results<h2 style="text-align: left;"><font color="#2b00fe">Advanced Placement (AP) Results</font></h2><div><div>Earlier this week the Advanced Placement results were published by the College Board. In May, 165 AP exams were taken by Belleville students in Calculus AB, Calculus BC, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Psychology, US Government and Politics, US History, Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Due to school closures this past spring, all students across the country completed the tests online, from home. A student must earn a score of at least 3 on a 5-point scale in order to earn college credit, 73% of the tests taken by Belleville students earned college credit. Belleville students also scored higher than the state average in all four core content areas. Congratulations to these students and their teachers!</div></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-36696c7c-7fff-8ed8-63bf-b9f87685dba7"><br /><div align="left" dir="ltr" style="margin-left: 0pt;"><table style="border-collapse: collapse; The West parking lot had a few visitors yesterday on the last "virtual" day of school. The Class of 2020 said goodbye in chalk messages in a few parking stalls. "That class" has certainly shown its humor and creativity despite the negativity that the COVID-19 pandemic brought on. Now that is the Wildcat Way!</div>

For the third consecutive year, a Belleville High School team, under the direction of Master Teacher Ed Neumann, made it to the state for Project Lead the Way's Engineering Development and Design (EDD) competition. EDD is PLTW's capstone course for its Engineering Program.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) had 36 judges from across the United States evaluating 12 different projects from Wisconsin students. Elizabeth Taylor, Director of STEM at MSOE stated, "We were thrilled by how many students were able to still participate in the competition given the abrupt and sudden change during one of the most important parts of the project process...The ability to do so during all the changes the pandemic brought to your school year shows the highest levels of commitment and scholastic achievement."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Juniors <b>Raina Nicholson</b> and <b>Anthony Pollen</b> created a heated stress ball prototype that can be used by active outdoors people. This year the students presented and were recorded online. In the past, the presentations took place in front of a panel of judges as part of the STEAM Open House. Once the results were released, Raina and Anthony took <u>second place</u> in the state, earning a <i>$2,000 team prize </i>(or $1,000 apiece).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This finish matches Belleville High School's highest placement in the state EDD competition and solidifies the School District of Belleville's recent Distinguished District designation. Congratulations to Raina and Anthony on their tremendous work!</div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">While the school building has been closed since March 13, Belleville Middle and High Schools continue to recognize students who have excelled in the new Safer at Home setting. Without being able to acknowledge these students in-person, teachers created individualized videos to send their nominees, and the selected students received gift cards in the mail. Congratulations to these Wildcats who are overcoming educational adversity!</span></span></div>

After not being able to seeing students on any regular basis since March 13, delivery of senior yard signs and scholarships this Monday and Tuesday was truly a fulfilling experience. Alec Ausmus from WKOW contacted me several weeks back, and I cannot thank him enough for his coverage spotlighting our seniors.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our staff could not wait to participate, and the Francois family and other scholarship donors, along with high school counselor Melanie Norton, made a final push to have scholarships and certificates prepared weeks earlier than normal. Thanks too to Lana Swenson and Janet VanBlarcom for the yard signs that they created for the Class of 2020.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We will continue to explore ways to honor this class so that they know, despite COVID-19, that we appreciate their hard work and effort in achieving this once-in-a-lifetime goal.</div>

All 6th graders participate in the Medical Detectives biomedical course and App Creators computer science course. Julia Xistris, Project Lead the Way Launch Master Teacher and Belleville Elementary School STEM Coordinator, teaches the PLTW computer science modules to students in grades K-5. “We are proud of the work that is being done by the students and teachers to experience a project-based learning curriculum. Project Lead the Way is inquiry-based, and our students are engaged as they collaborate, make connections, and take ownership of their learning.” All 4K-6th educators teach biomedical, engineering, or computer science modules throughout the year. Launch modules and teacher resources are available in both English and Spanish and are fully aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; white-space: pre-wrap;">Belleville Middle School students are engaged in Computer Science for Innovators & Makers and PLTW8. High school course offerings include Computer Science Principles, Principles of Engineering (POE), Introduction to Engineering Design (IED), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), and Engineering Design and Development (EDD). Ed Neumann, the Project Lead the Way Coordinator for the district and an EDD Master Teacher, responded to the recognition, "There are many skills that are present in all PLTW courses: students collaborate, learn from failure, use STEM principles to solve real-world problems and develop soft skills that better prepare them for post-high school careers and education. The School District of Belleville has students working on these skills from ages 4 to 18 in PLTW courses! It is a tremendous honor that we have earned the designation of a distinguished district. A huge thank you to our community, parents, students, industry partners, and staff for all of their support; without it, this would not have been possible."</span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; white-space: pre-wrap;">Jared Schulting, a 2019 Belleville High School graduate now attending UW-Platteville, noted, "After taking multiple PLTW courses in high school, I realized how greatly each one impacted my life. Not only did they prepare me for my future in college, but they gave me the knowledge and confidence to work on projects around the house. PLTW opened up many different opportunities, from constructing with my hands to writing CNC code, I was able to complete many different projects. I would like to thank the PLTW instructors and the School District of Belleville. Because of their support, knowledge, and dedication toward the program, I have been able to succeed in my work and college experiences.”</span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; white-space: pre-wrap;">Another 2019 BHS grad, Dylan Gratz, added, "Project Lead the Way helped me find my future in STEM as soon as I began high school. On May 6, 2020, the Wisconsin Advanced Placement Advisory Council recognized Belleville High School for the third consecutive year and the second year in-a-row as a<b> Level II Pacesetter School</b>. The benchmarks for each of the three levels are explained below.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Level 1: At least 30% of students testing and a passing rate of at least 70%</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Level 2: At least 20% of students testing and a passing rate of at least 65%</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Level 3: At least 10% of students testing and a passing rate of at least 60%</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In 2019, BHS students took 143 Advanced Placement exams. Wildcat passing rates were an astounding <u>81.1%</u>. That would have clearly qualified Belleville High School has a Level I school. However, only 28.4% of students at BHS took an AP exam last spring, narrowly missing the 30% participation benchmark for Level I. Belleville High School staff will continue to encourage students to challenge themselves with Advanced Placement courses. With just 4-5 additional students taking an AP exam, Level I is once again within our reach!</div>

Each year, the Capitol Conference honors its member schools' top academic graduating seniors. This banquet has usually been held at the Sheraton Madison Hotel on the second Monday in May. However, due to the Safer at Home order and COVID-19 pandemic, the annual banquet to recognize these students, scheduled for May 11, was cancelled this year. Belleville High School staff still wishes to honor these students for all of their hard work and accomplishments. The ten featured students will finish their high school careers with cumulative grade point averages of 3.88 or higher. We are proud of these Wildcats!</div>
