Ag Students Visit 3rd Grade Classrooms

Fourteen Belleville FFA members spent some time in the 3rd grade classrooms today for FFA week. The high schoolers helped the 3rd graders make chapstick. The ingredients were beeswax and soybean oil, so the FFA members taught about where those products come from. They also discussed the purpose of wax not only for our lips, but on the feathers of ducks and plants. The students also played an agriculture Jeopardy game where they learned some new terms and discussed what FFA and agriculture are really all about! The FFA members had fun interacting with the younger kids today and promoting agriculture! [Submitted by Mrs. Knudson]

Middle School Overture Trip

Both the 7th and 8th grades took a field trip this morning (2-24) to the Overture Center to see the play "The Mojo and the Sayso." A.L.I.C.E. Parent Forum

Last night (2-10), administrators presented A.L.I.C.E., the district's new school safety protocols, to a group of about 25 parents and staff. A.L.I.C.E. stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. It takes a pro-active, age-appropriate approach to violent intruders in a school setting. The next step will to begin training with students in March.

Start thinking Spring!

The Horticulture class transplanted their first set of plant plugs today during class! They potted, labeled, and watered  approximately 120 plants including geraniums, dianthus, juncus, and straw flowers. We will be heating up the greenhouse soon, and the class will continue to transplant more plugs, start vegetables & flowers from seed, and do some of their own experiments. All of these plants will be grown by the students and be sold in May at the annual plant sale during the village-wide garage sales. [Submitted by Mrs. Knudson]

Dr. Justin Patchin Presents on Cyberbullying

UW-Eau Claire Criminal Justice Professor, Dr. Justin Patchin, spoke to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders at the end of the day on Wednesday (2-10), along with all K-12 staff after school, and 23 parents and students in a night session from 6-7pm in the auditorium. His message was that students, parents, the school, and law enforcement all need to work together to address the issue of cyberbullying and that we need to teach our children how to appropriately use technology, just like we would teach them to drive a car. His resource page (http://cyberbullying.org/resources/) has additional resources for teens and parents.

Animal Science Field Trip

Today (2/4), the Animal Science class went on a field trip to ABS Global in DeForest and the UW-Research farm in Arlington.  At ABS, students saw the "behind the scenes" procedures involved with collecting samples for artificial insemination.  They witnessed the laboratories where the semen is processed and learned about the value of genetics and the types of research done within the dairy and beef industries. They also toured the barns and learned the process of selecting desirable bulls and the procedure involved with confirming that their genetics have hit high enough standards to be sold to clients around the world.  We then went down the road to the UW Research Farm's swine and sheep facilities. Students learned about biosecurity and the advancements in technology & research done on the swine there, such as heart stents and even dental studies! Lastly, at the sheep farm they observed some ewes with their January lambs. The farm manager discussed the uniqueness of raising sheep, what traits make up a desirable ewe, and the processes of lambing, weaning, and shearing. It was a fun trip and connected well to our current unit focused on reproduction. [Submitted by Mrs. Knudson]

Mr. Pamperin has once again started his very popular rollerskating unit with his Middle School students. We have access to the equipment for about two weeks. The students were here this morning, choosing to skate at 7:15am!
